Count Alexander Rostov is sentenced to house arrest by a Bolshevik tribunal in 1922. Rostov now lives in an attic room while some of the most tumultous decades in Russian history unfold. He turns inward, meeting eccentric characters at the hotel where he is imprisoned and finding a rich emotional life.
